FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

REGISTRATION AND PROGRAMMING

How do I know what programs are available and when to register for them?

Log into our Registration Form and you can see all open and upcoming programs. General schedule information is also available here.

How do I know my registration went through?

Option 4 in our registration system gives you access to the entire history of every program for which you have registered for your account.

I AM HAVING DIFFICULTY REGISTERING MY PLAYERS. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Contact us and we will help.

IS PROGRAM PLACEMENT GUARANTEED?

We do our best to place every child in a program (a team, a clinic, camp, etc.) and we have a great track record of placing all on-time registrants. We are a non-profit that relies on volunteer coaches for our recreational sports and professionals to run our clinics.  If your child is not placed in a program due to lack of coaches, you can volunteer to coach and we will form a new team to accommodate wait list registrants.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A PROGRAM IS FULL?

We love that our programs are in high demand and fill up fast! If a program is full, you can register and be placed on a wait list. If you volunteer to coach, we will form a new team to accommodate wait list registrants. Otherwise, we move through wait lists on a first come, first served basis as registrants drop out or new teams/sessions are formed.

The best way to avoid wait lists is to register when programs open. If you are registered with us, we’ll keep you up-to-date via email blasts.

CAN I REQUEST A SPECIFIC TEAM OR COACH?

It depends. For baseball and softball (including adult softball), we encourage participants to request specific teams. So long as teams are not oversubscribed, we will accommodate all such requests.

For basketball and flag football, the only guarantees are that the children of coaches will be rostered on their parent’s team. If two kids want to guaranty playing together, their parents must coach together. Otherwise, we cannot honor requests because basketball and football rosters are set via draft. This is necessary to maintain balanced teams.

For camps and clinics, we will honor all age-appropriate requests to play with friends so long as individual sessions are not oversubscribed.

IS THERE A FEE FOR LATE REGISTRATIONS?

We often charge a higher program fee for late registrations. This is structured to cover the additional administrative burdens and operational expenses associated with last minute logistics, including engaging part-time help to manage teams without volunteer coaches.

Does 78 Youth Sports form balanced teams?

Yes. Balanced competition is at the core of a good experience. Participants get nothing from a league where they dominate (or are dominated by) the competition so we work diligently to create leagues with teams of similar skill. This is accomplished through player evaluations and drafts in basketball and flag football. Because there are so many more teams in baseball, we avoid the draft and place teams in divisions based upon their collective skill.

WHY MUST MY CHILD ATTEND BASKETBALL OR FOOTBALL EVALUATIONS?

Because evaluations are necessary to complete the league drafts, without which we would not have balanced teams. If your child cannot attend any of the evaluations, he or she will be placed on a team, but may be moved to another team during the season. Refunds will not be issued should a player who was not evaluated be moved during the season.

CAN MY CHILD PLAY IN AN OLDER OR YOUNGER AGE GROUP?

Start by registering your child for the appropriate age division then email us with a request explaining why you want your child to play up or down. We will consider all requests, but understand there are no guaranties that such requests will be granted. We frown upon playing with younger kids (usually for safety reasons) and there are often other circumstances that prevent us from honoring such requests (e.g., program capacity, PPBA rules, etc.).

DO YOU SCHEDULE MAKEUP GAMES?

We will make our best efforts to reschedule games. Unfortunately, if you were rained out, it is likely everyone else was too and that means a lot of teams are trying to use very limited amounts of surplus field space so we recommend coaches find a few options for rescheduled games and contact us as quickly as possible. We will do our best to accommodate you.

Brooklyn Bulldogs schedules are tournament/league dependent. Coaches and team admins will communicate schedule changes.

WHAT LOCATIONS ARE USED FOR PROGRAMMING?

We use facilities all over Brooklyn (and a few elsewhere). Click here to see the location of all the fields and gyms that host our programming.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REC AND TRAVEL SPORTS?

Recreational (or “Rec”) sports are more casual, less expensive and require less commitment than travel teams. Rec play includes optional practices, local competition and volunteer coaches whereas, travel teams are more structured, including tryouts, mandatory attendance and professional coaches. Travel teams are also a year-round commitment at a significantly higher cost.

How do I cancel registration?

Email us prior to the start of the season with a request detailing the reason you want to cancel. We do not grant refunds after a season (or session) has begun.

HOW CAN I BECOME A COACH?

WHAT IF I WOULD LIKE TO COACH BUT I DO NOT HAVE A CHILD IN THE PROGRAM?

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF ME AS A COACH?

DOES 78 YOUTH SPORTS NEED VOLUNTEERS BESIDES COACHES?

Is there a refund if practice(s)/game(s) are cancelled due to circumstances outside of 78 Youth Sports' control?

Since activities of 78 Youth Sports are held in public school gyms and public parks, they may be canceled or postponed, due to school events, renovations, weather, construction or other circumstances beyond our control.

We will not provide refunds for these type of situations. We do try to anticipate and troubleshoot issues before they occur. Unfortunately, we do not control the weather (wish we could!).

What is the refund policy for tickets purchased to outside events?

If an activity relates to the sale of tickets to an outside event, such as a major league baseball game or photographs taken during our photo days, such purchases are subject to the restrictions (such as refunds, returns, transferability or rescheduling) made by such other organization and that 78 Youth Sports is not responsible to resolve such issues.

It starts on 7th Avenue around 1st and 2nd Streets, proceeds up to the park and ends at the Prospect Park Band Shell for Opening Day ceremonies. Details will follow in the spring.
